AsianScientist (Jan. 13, 2014) – Two Chinese scientists have been presented China’s top science award for their outstanding contribution to scientific and technological innovation, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Physical chemist Zhang Cunhao and nuclear weapon expert Cheng Kaijia, both academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, were presented with certificates by Chinese president Xi Jinping at an annual ceremony held to honor distinguished scientists and research achievements.

“China has entered a new stage in which the country must rely more on sci-tech innovation to guide and support its economic development and social progress,” said Premier Li Keqiang at the award ceremony. “Our country’s economy is shifting from high-speed growth to the phase of medium to high-speed growth.”

Li added that China could only improve on its economy by relying on scientific and technological innovation, Xinhua reported.
