Views of a solar eclipse from all over the world
The eclipse first reached Oregon on the West Coast before moving across a dozen states to South Carolina on the East Coast.
People across the world are patiently waiting for the spectacle, which is expected to be the most viewed and photographed eclipse in history.
However, overcast weather is likely to obscure the spectacle for most Britons, according to the Met Office.
Only south-west England and south Wales are likely to have any chance of witnessing the eclipse - and even then it is expected to be through a break in the clouds.
