Use real life to combat 'nomophobia'

This is definitely a phenomenon that our society should focus on more.

Smartphones have become a ubiquitous part of our lives. While it is impossible to cut out their use completely, I believe we can gradually become less dependent on them.

We can start by using our smartphones in moderation. The urge to check them usually comes from the fear of being excluded. Hence, we should try engaging in more real-life interactions with others as an alternative.

We could also keep ourselves occupied, thereby reducing the temptation to check our smartphones out of boredom.

Schools can do more to prevent children from becoming addicted to their phones. For example, I was able to avoid using my smartphone for five days in a row as I was kept busy on a school-organised trip.

We need to be smart about using our smartphones and not let them take over our lives.
